Leadership

When to hire your first operations lead

The signs it is time to hire an operations lead, and the profile that works best in growing companies.

Most founders hire an operations lead later than they should. Here are the signs it is time.

The signs

  • You are the only person who can solve most problems

  • Good people leave because nothing gets decided

  • Growth has stalled while sales are still strong

  • You spend more time on scheduling than on customers

Who to hire

Look for someone who has run operations one size bigger than you are now. People from much larger companies often struggle without the systems they are used to.

How to set them up

Give them three clear outcomes for the first six months and a weekly hour with you. Then let them own the decisions, including the ones you would have made differently.
